Choosing a secondary school
From Term 1 2017, Victorian government and Catholic schools have used the Victorian Curriculum F-10.
For more information on the curriculum, see:
The Victorian Curriculum F–10 - VCAA
If you are attending a primary government school, you will usually go to the secondary school closest to where your family lives. If there are places available at another government school, or at a Catholic or independent school, this might be the first choice for you and your family.
Exploring your options during Year 5 and Year 6 will give you time to visit different schools, attend information sessions and find a school that suits you.
Your Year 6 teacher or coordinator can help you with any questions you might have and they will also help your family with the paperwork for enrolling at your chosen secondary school.
Things to think about
- Does your family have a connection to a particular school?
- How important is it to you that you know other children at the school?
- What kind of educational programs are offered?
- What extra-curricular activities does the school offer?
- Do you feel welcome at the school?
The process of choosing a secondary school happens over a period of time.
- You and your family might start looking at different options while you are in Grade 5
- Your primary school might run a transition program with the local secondary school towards the end of Year 6
- Teachers from secondary schools may visit your school to take small groups for lessons or talk about life at secondary school
